Cistus shrub, flourishing throughout the Mediterranean, yields delightful Amber Labdanum resin. Traditions Russia, Poland and the Baltic countries are famous for natural deposits of fossilized amber resin, many strata over 200 million years old. Denmark possesses shorelines in Jutland where a pale opaque amber, milk amber,is commonly found in clumps of seaweed. The Arabic/Sanskrit origin of the the word ambar translates: Incense which is ignited. When genuine fossil amber is cast on hot coals, it releases a sweet balsamic pine aroma -- trapped within its golden heart for 13 million years. Amber Labdanum and several varieties of Himalayan coniferous trees produce the amber resins used in modern perfumery and aromatherapy. Ambergris, a rare substance from whales, is not at all related to botanical ambers.
